Bob Edwards is the Senior Assistant District Attorney for the 9th Judicial District of Tennessee and works for elected District Attorney Russell Johnson in a four-county district. He graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee in 1972 and from the University of Tennessee with a degree in General Business in 1976 with High Honors and from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1979 where he remained on the dean’s list four all three years of his legal education. Taking up residence in Knoxville, Bob operated a private practice from 1980 until 1998 specializing in criminal defense with additional practice areas in civil litigation and real estate development. The criminal defense practice carried him to all counties in East Tennessee and many in Middle and West Tennessee. He was a member of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee Criminal Justice Panel and was involved in several major criminal trials before each of the federal district judges in Knoxville as well and has defended accused citizens in many other State courts outside of Tennessee. In 1998 he became an Assistant Public Defender in the Knoxville Community Law Office and practiced before all three criminal courts in Knox County and all five general sessions courts until 2014 when he accepted his current position. As a public defender Bob was a team leader directing jury trials in all manner of criminal cases supervising a group of lawyers representing indigent defendants in cases of all types with an emphasis in homicide trials. In 2014 District Attorney Russell Johnson recruited him as a supervisor for criminal jury trials in Loudon, Roane, Morgan and Meigs Counties. During his many years of practice, he has tried several hundred jury trials with emphasis on homicide cases and was fully qualified and certified as a death penalty criminal defense attorney before becoming an assistant district attorney. As a prosecutor he continues to try murder cases with various members of the group that he supervises, sharing his experience and expertise with his co-workers. Bob and Jonathan Edwards are not related to each other but happily share a high level of commitment to the proper administration of justice and the practice of criminal law at the highest level. They take pride in never going to trial without intense preparation and they aspire to be better prepared that the opposition every time. The two have enjoyed trying cases together for the last six years and have achieved convictions in every murder case that they have tried resulting in sending many defendants to prison to serve life sentences for taking the lives of others.
